BRIGADOON HARVEST PASTURED EGGS www.brigadoonharvest.com.au
John and Estelle Joseph run a flock of laying hens at Tooraweenah and
call their girls 'pastured' to distinguish them from conventional free
range. Their main focus is the health of the bird and this is achieved
through allowing them to lead a natural existence. Their houses are
mobile (Joel Salatin style) and are moved around the paddock every few
days, ensuring they have fresh grass and bugs. They do not simply "have
access" to the great outdoors, they are out foraging from dawn to dusk,
protected by two Maremma guardian dogs.
To supplement their grass diet, free choice grains, with kelp. shellgrit
and other minerals are offered. The Josephs do not use chemical
medications on the chickens (the rare ill bird is isolated and given
Vitamin C and garden greens and nature is allowed to take its course),
and no artificial fertilizers or pesticides/herbicides are used on the
paddocks. Their feed contains no yolk colourants and the yolks vary in
depth of colour, depending on the season and on each individual bird's
food preferences. They seem to instinctively know what they need and
constantly adjust their feed choices - that is one reason they do not
give the normal commercial pellets. The dry climate usually means soils
tend to be higher in most minerals than lush, high-rainfall areas which
lose minerals through 'leaching'. The combination of all the above
produces the tasty egg that all their regular customers love.
This commitment to the welfare of the animal can mean sacrificing"yield". No artificial lighting is used to to force laying. Extremes
in weather take their toll on production, as does too much or not enough
rain. Hens are provided with cosy, straw-lined nest boxes - no conveyor
belts in sight. Eggs are collected, checked, candled and packed by
hand. The Josephs only sell eggs collected from nestboxes as freshness
can't be guaranteed for the rare paddock-laid egg.
They are offering to trial an egg delivery service on two Sunday
afternoons every month in Coonabarabran (dates will be advised via email
to those who express interest). Prices are $4 for 500g, $6 for 600g, $7
for 700g. No half dozens available. Eggs will need to be pre-ordered
before the delivery date via email to john@brigadoonharvest.com.au (use"Coona egg order"or similiar in the subject line) and payment to be made
on the day with cash. First in, best dressed - at least until they next
expand! Please email Brigadoon Harvest to express your interest in
being involved.
